Cabinet with Gilded Relief Panels

This oak cabinet was built by Dimitrios in an Ionic style (note pediment) and can be seen in his studio. He is an accomplished furniture maker and cabinetmaker as well as a master wood carver. It was designed to hold a part of his studio library, the books he consults with most frequency. Note the concealed reading table that pulls out, when needed. The lower panels are decorated with applied mahogany reliefs, set off by selective gilding. This work illustrates the ancient Greek motto, “Healthy mind, healthy body”. On the left panel, we see the philosopher, on the right, the Olympic athlete.
